Ron Wasserman, a fourth generation musician and lifelong New Yorker, has an unusually diverse track record of performing, composing, arranging, commissioning, and producing music. Since his first professional gig in 1979 at age 18, Ron has logged well over 5,000 performances in virtually every performing arts genre imaginable, the majority of them as the principal bassist of the NYC Ballet Orchestra, which he joined in 1988.
In 2014, he formed The New York Jazzharmonic big band to perform pieces by a diverse array of composers from different genres. Ron has premiered and/or commissioned works by Rufus Reid, Courtney Bryan, Stephanie Ann Boyd, J.P. Jofre, himself, Miho Hazama, and others.
In 2016 the Jazzharmonic partnered with The Ashley Bouder Project, commissioning composers AND choreographers, with an emphasis on women for dance concerts at Symphony Space and the Joyce Theater.
There is virtually no genre Ron won’t tackle in large venues or small musical salons: Jazz, world music, music theater, dada, indie-rock, contemporary chamber music, etc. Along the way he developed a particular affinity for playing Nuevo Tango as a member of JP Jofre’s incredible quintet.
His own jazz and classical music fills five CDs, with two more in the works.
During the pandemic, Ron directed two videos featuring the musicians and dancers of NYCB then on hiatus. His Curbside Nutcracker got close to 1/2 million views on social media.
In 2022, Ron arranged the music of Wayne Shorter for the NYCB, for which he conducted the orchestra, and also the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra for several performances.
In 2023, he helped prepare music by Solange Knowles for the premiere of a new ballet by Gianna Reisen for NYCB.
