Carlos Jiménez Fernández became Principal Trombonist at New York City Ballet in the Spring of 2022. He has appeared with ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, All-Star Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra of Spain and as guest Principal Trombone with the London Symphony Orchestra.

Carlos began his musical training in a local band in his native Algeciras, in Andalusia, Spain. He started playing euphonium at the age of six under the tutelage of Amando Herrero, switching to the trombone two years later.

As a chamber musician, Carlos has performed and recorded trombone quartet music and is a founding member of Brass22, a brass quintet that has been featured in several performances in Lincoln Center. Brass22 attended the American Brass Quintet Seminar at The Juilliard School for four years and the Aspen Music Festival. Carlos has also been a Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center, Music Academy of the West, and the Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra.

In addition to presenting world premiers of trombone, ensemble, and orchestral repertoire, Carlos’ broad musical interests have led him to perform on sackbut with Juilliard Historical Performance.

Carlos holds a B.M. from The Juilliard School, where he studied with Joseph Alessi. During his time at Juilliard he was a recipient of a Gluck Community Service Fellowship and he served as a Teaching Fellow in the Ear Training Department, working closely with Professor Rebecca Scott. Upon graduating, he was awarded the Peter Mennin Prize in Music.

When not performing, Carlos enjoys reading, the outdoors, cooking, and knitting.
